06 Apr The Changing Landscape of Healthcare
Late last week, while many of us were enjoying some time out of the office for a spring break that, at least in the Chicago area, felt something very short of spring, Walmart and Humana made some news confirming that they are in talks to merge. This would certainly be big news for the healthcare industry if this relationship were to move forward, especially in the wake of the recently announced merger between CVS and Aetna. Both CVS and Walmart have clinics in some of their locations. Neither has confirmed what effect a new relationship with these insurers would have on their existing retail clinic business.
We have recently mentioned other new relationships forming within the industry on our blog. Specifically, the insurance endeavor announced recently by Amazon, JP Morgan Chase, and Berkshire Hathaway, as well as the endeavor by four large healthcare organizations who announced plans to form their own pharmaceutical company.
All of these relationships are in their very earliest stages, and it will be very interesting to watch as they develop. Of prime interest to those of us who are healthcare providers, is how this will affect the healthcare landscape in ways that may directly impact our business, both in positive and negative ways.
