16 Aug Illinois First to Require Coverage for EpiPens
As of January 1, 2020, Illinois will be the first state in the nation to mandate insurance companies cover epinephrine injectors for individuals under the age of 18.
Governor JB Pritzker signed House Bill 3435 this week, after outrage in recent years regarding the increase in price of EpiPen injectors- a sixfold increase in fewer than ten years.
Last year, the FDA approved a generic form of the drug, which will also aid in the efforts to increase patient access to this lifesaving medication.
What remains to be seen, however, is what out-of-pocket costs parents will still be facing from deductibles and prescription co-pays, particularly at the beginning of the year, and also how strictly the new law will be enforced. The bill also specifies that coverage will be provided for “medically necessary” injectors, but who will determine medical necessity is unclear.
