01 Jun Cost of Care Increases Evidenced in the Emergency Department

We saw a very interesting article in Modern Healthcare this week that we wanted to share with our readers. We have been sharing some compelling healthcare data recently, including some information related to the increasing cost of healthcare, so we thought this may be of interest to you as well.

Although emergency department utilization has stayed flat over the past several years, ED spending almost doubled from 2009 to 2016. The study conducted by the not-for-profit Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) cited increasing severity of cases and an increase in the pricing associated with those visits as reasons for the increase in overall spending.

The article goes on to summarize interesting statistical findings, including the increase in the average ED visit spend moving from $125 in 2009 to $247 in 2016. You can read more in-depth about this study HERE.
