16 Feb Advocate, Aurora Merger Moving Forward

This week, the merger between Advocate and Aurora Healthcare in Wisconsin cleared a major hurdle with approval from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The chair of the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the merger February 1st, and now the parties are just waiting for approval from the Wisconsin Commissioner of Insurance. The merged entity would have more than 3,300 employed physicians, 500 outpatient locations, and 70,000 employees.

Last year, the FTC denied the attempted merger between Advocate and NorthShore due to the overlapping footprint of their existing markets, and the projection that the merger would provide the new entity with 60% market share in the Chicagoland area. Advocate and Milwaukee-based Aurora Healthcare do not have an overlapping market footprint, which is generally more favorable with the FTC. It will be interesting to see how this large merger changes the organizations involved and affects the surrounding markets.
